VIA DEL SALE
a unique and multifaceted experience
Breathtaking views between mountains and sea, military history, unspoiled nature, and options for every kind of adventurous traveler.
The Alta Via del Sale is a spectacular high-altitude route that winds along former military and trade roads between Piedmont and Liguria, near the French border. This dirt road stretches for about 39 km, connecting Limone Piemonte (CN) with Monesi di Triora (IM), crossing stunning landscapes between the Maritime and Ligurian Alps at altitudes ranging from 1,800 to 2,100 meters. The name (“High Salt Road”) comes from the area's historic role as one of the ancient "salt routes" used since the Middle Ages to transport this precious commodity from the sea inland to the plains. Today, it’s a panoramic, historical, and natural trail popular with hikers, cyclists, motorcyclists, and 4x4 off-road enthusiasts, with specific regulations in place to protect the environment. Open seasonally (generally from mid-June to mid-October, weather permitting), the Alta Via del Sale is a unique adventure that blends wild nature, outdoor exploration, and historical memory.
